Google Play sets deadline for Android apps to implement its billing system

With the ongoing fiasco between Epic Games and Apple for Fornite, Google has decided to make its stance on the matter clear. The company has announced that developers that have apps on the Google Play Store must use Google Play's billing system. In other words, apps that bypass it will not be allowed.

In a new blog post, Google singled out Epic Games' Fornite as an example, so it's clear what kind of direct payments the company is referring to. Any app that doesn't use Google Play's system, which takes a cut for all app purchases, will not be allowed on the store. In return, developers get to enjoy the services and security provided by the platform.

Google has updated its development policy

Google has updated its developer programme policy on payments to reflect this change that will go into effect starting from 20 January 2021. However, developers that already have apps on Google Play Store have a longer deadline. Specifically, apps that still haven't integrate the billing system will have until 30 September 2021 to complete the update.

The gist of it is that if your app charges payment, Google takes a cut and that isn't up for debate. Makes you wonder if Epic Games will now attempt to sue Google.
