Back in January, we reported how Malaysia’s 5G network coverage in populated areas finally reached the 80 per cent target, hitting 80.2% coverage as of 31 December 2023. However, it seems that the coverage rate has stumbled this year, as only a mere 1.5 per cent coverage increase was recorded in 5 months.

The latest 5G network coverage in populated areas was recently revealed by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching in the Dewan Rakyat. Replying to a question by Baling Member of Parliament (MP) Hassan bin Saad, Teo said that the 5G network coverage stood at 81.7 per cent nationwide as of 31 May. She further revealed that Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has completed 7114 5G sites nationwide.

Here’s the breakdown of the 5G network coverage by state:

Nevertheless, given that the 80 per cent target has been achieved, Malaysia will be shifting to a dual 5G network soon. Accordingly, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that telcos for the 2nd 5G network will be selected by the end of this year.
