Previously, we reported that Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) would be recipients of 10 Starlink internet devices following the government’s agreement with the Elon Musk company. True enough, Malaysia’s first Starlink internet device has officially been installed at UiTM’s Kuala Pilah campus in Negeri Sembilan.

As shared by Communications and Digital Minister (KKD) Fahmi Fadzil on Twitter, the first Starlink device was officially handed over to the campus earlier today by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In another tweet, Fahmi also showed the internet device being officially installed at the campus.

He added that the use of Starlink internet devices which utilises satellite connection for internet access is a proof of concept to help students get a better network connection. This is a temporary measure while waiting for a bigger allocation to install access points for the campus’ WiFi.

The KKD Minister further elaborated that surveys by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) found that the UiTM Kuala Pilah campus has various blind spots for its outdoor and in-building coverage, as well as WiFi access points. In fact, the campus is one of 10 UiTM campuses that suffer from serious connection issues and hopefully, the Starlink internet device would alleviate this issue.

Besides that, Fahmi also confirmed that several other higher learning institutes in rural areas have been identified to receive the satellite internet service. Well, if you’re interested in using Starlink yourself, the company is officially licensed to operate in Malaysia, though it could be quite costly.
