Opensignal have recently announced the results for their Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 and Netherlands is the best place for video, South Korea is the best for gaming and has fastest average download speeds (~143 Mbps) while Denmark wins it for uploading (~20.9 Mbps). Malaysia’s telcos on the other hand managed to score with improvements in 4G Availability - Global Rising Stars but after Malaysia shut down 3G mobile connectivity last year, this isn’t entirely unexpected.

U Mobile scored the highest percentage increase for Malaysia’s telcos at 6.7%, followed by Unifi at 5.8% and Digi and Maxis at 4.6%. To put this into context, none of them are in the top 10, but to be able to achieve this in current pandemic times is still an impressive achievement. Surprisingly, Maxis was the only Malaysia telco that managed to place in Opensignal’s Upload Speed Experience awards at 30.3%.

According to Opensignal, 5G remains rather slow on the uptake even for the main winners of the 2022 awards but Malaysia’s DNB recently announced that the average 5G speed in Malaysia could be 624 Mbps. While YES and Unifi have announced 5G coverage for KL, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya, speeds have not been stable due to the NSA (Non-Standalone) nature of the network.

We have noticed 4G performance improving though, sometimes getting 100Mbps speeds and higher but only in certain areas. We think that while it wouldn’t hurt to pick up a 5G smartphone or device if you have the money for it, 4G only smartphone users would still get pretty fast speeds at this moment in time.

You can check out Opensignal’s full report at their site but what do you think about it? Malaysia seems to be starting on the right path but it’s 2022 already and we were sort of expecting more 5G connectivity by now. Let us know what you think on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com
