OnePlus flagships in 2022 will still run on OxygenOS but with OPPO ColorOS DNA

Yup, you read the headline title right - the next OnePlus device (which isn't the OnePlus 9T series) won't be using OxygenOS purely but merging with OPPO's ColorOS. This was confirmed in an interview between The Verge and OnePlus CEO Pete Lau recently. But what does that mean for the future of OxygenOS?

From the interview, it was stated that OnePlus and OPPO will be "unifying the underlying codebase" of the two operating systems. Both OxygenOS and ColorOS will still have their own features but the coding is the same as it'll be developed by the same team, for example - OnePlus' Warp Charge technology would be integrating with OPPO's SuperVOOC fast charging technology. Just like a hybrid, he described it as fast and smooth, and clean and lightweight like OxygenOS as well as reliable, and smart and feature-rich like ColorOS.

That's quite a u-turn by Lau as he said that OxygenOS is here to stay after announcing the merging with OPPO. But in a way, he is not wrong since the name will retain but rather the integration of the codes. Thankfully, older OnePlus devices will get a piece of that update in the future, including the Nord series.

In case you missed it, it was announced back in mid-June that OnePlus is joining forces with OPPO. Lau emphasized that with the integration, OnePlus will have a better-streamlined operation to capitalize on the additional shared resources. Both OnePlus and OPPO are owned by BBK Electronics.

Also, Lau confirmed that the OnePlus 9T series won't be appearing this year from the same interview. But how do you feel about that? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
