Penang state and hair salon operators in Kuching say no to haircut services during MCO

Unless you haven't been paying attention at all, you should already know about the movement control order (MCO) being extended to 28 April 2020. Since another two weeks of closure could severely impact several industries, the government has allowed certain sectors to operate at this time. Strangely, haircut services were allowed, though it seems some people aren't keen on the idea.

According to the News Straits Times, the Penang state government refuses to allow haircut and hairdressing services to operate in Penang during the MCO. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow made the announcement earlier today and cited the difficulty for such services in maintaining social distancing. He also urged Putrajaya to reconsider this decision.

Penang isn't the only state that has taken this stance, as individual hair salon operators in Kuching have also decided not to open, wrote Borneo Post. One of them is Kuching-based hairdresser Chung Jian Ping, who pointed out the difficulty in giving haircuts while customers are wearing masks. He also said that sanitising the equipment and chairs after each customer is done would be difficult as well.

Most people would probably agree that it's hard to get a haircut without maintaining distance. However, some may believe that it's possible to do so as long as the right precautions are taken.
