In this new era of flexible displays, foldable devices aren't the only form factor we'll see. There are a few companies like LG and TCL that have been working on rollable displays, but now it seems Samsung is joining the camp. Recently, a new patent for a rollable display was awarded to the company.

According to Android Headlines (via Pigtou), Samsung's new rollable display will be for a mobile device. In the patent document, it was stated that the design is for a device that will have a touch display panel, roller housing, and a panel driver. Most of these are self-explanatory, while the panel drive manages display based on whether it's extended or not.

Based on the design, this design is going to be for a smartphone. However, it'll be much thicker to accommodate the two rollers on the sides. These will roll in portions of the display into the sides of the device's chassis. When the display is fully extended, the device turns into a tablet. In effect, this will be a great way to make a tablet that can be more compact.

Of course, a patent is just an idea that hasn't been turned into reality. Until we see a working proof of concept, it's best to take this with a grain of salt. With that said, what do you think of the idea? Also, do you prefer this type of display or a foldable one? Let us know on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more news like this.
