TCL reveals concept models for its tri-fold and extendable display phones

The cancellation of MWC this year meant that we didn't get the chance to see a lot of new things. But TCL is making up for lost opportunity with the reveal of dummy units for its latest concept devices. One of them is the phone with an extendable screen that we saw a few weeks back, while the other is a tri-fold device.

So, how are they supposed to work? Let's start with the one with the extendable screen. According to Android Authority, the idea for this device to be able to hide the flexible display inside the phone's body. To extend it, there's a motor that will expand the body and sort of 'pull' the rest of the screen out. If done well, this could mean that there would be an obvious crease since it's not folding but extending. However, the demo unit used doesn't have the motor or an actual working screen, so we can't tell how well the concept would work.

Next up is the tri-fold concept model, which is a bit more straightforward. As the name suggests, this one is meant to fold into three parts, rather than in half like the other foldable currently available. In other words, by using two hinges instead of one, it's possible to use it in a wider variety of form factors. Of course, it's also ridiculously thick (when folded) by today's standards.

We quite like the model with an extendable screen, if only because it's a unique concept. It's clear that we are unlikely to see an actual retail smartphone featuring this technology that soon. But would you buy a phone like that if it becomes available in Malaysia? Let us know what you think on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more news.
