Sony sold 4.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles in Q4 2020 alone

The latest gaming consoles launched not too long ago in November 2020 and have been doing well since. In particular, the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) seems to be the one that had better sales performance. This was detailed in a newly published earnings report.

According to CNBC.com, Sony sold around 4.5 million units of its new PS5 in Q4 2020 alone. That's an incredible amount, considering that the game console's availability has been low since then. Interestingly, Sony confirmed that the PS5 is actually being sold at a loss. Despite that, the company reported a 50% increase in operating income at 80.2 billion yen (~RM3.09 billion) for 2020. This was credited to the sales of software and services, namely games and PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

On the other hand, sales of the PS4 has been steadily dropping

Pre-orders for the PS5 opened on 12 November 2020 in Malaysia but units were quickly sold out, which left many disappointed. A second batch became available last month, but that sold out soon too. Overall, it has been hard for most Malaysian gamers to get their hands on the elusive console.

However, we do expect more to be available as time goes on. If you really want one, just be patient and you'll get it eventually. Personally, I consider the Nintendo Switch a better deal in 2021, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
