Steam publishes CAD files for Steam Deck so users can 3D print new casings

Although Valve's Steam Deck is not officially in Malaysia, there are ways that you can get a hold of one. Local gaming store Impulse Gaming is importing the console to Malaysia in limited numbers, so some of you could get it soon. You might even be able to customise it.

Recently, Valve published the CAD files of the Steam Deck's outer shell/casing via GitLab. The files provide detailed measurements of the handheld console from all sides, which should allow users to create replacement parts if necessary. All you'll need is a 3D printer to make your parts.

More interestingly, this could open up the market for aftermarket modding and third-party accessories. The company said that it's "looking forward to seeing what the community creates". This is in stark contrast with Sony and its PlayStation 5 console. Sony has made covers in different colours, but there's no market for custom covers since third-party manufacturers were banned from making any.

Currently, we're not too sure how much customisation can be done on the Steam Deck. But this is certainly good news for users who want to personalise their console.
