Much has been said about Tesla over the past week, including how the company allegedly cancelled its plans to build factories in Southeast Asia, as well as how it’s suffering losses and can’t compete with Chinese EV makers. Now, after MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul clarified that Tesla never committed to building factories in Malaysia, he revealed that his Ministry will be meeting with Tesla representatives from the US to discuss its investment plans in our country.
According to Bernama, the MITI Minister asserted that the meeting will take place on 22 August. Furthermore, Tengku Zafrul said that an official statement would be issued following the meeting with Tesla.
He reiterated that Tesla’s previous commitment in Malaysia was only for it to invest in our country’s EV charging and research and development ecosystem as well as related sources. Tengku Zafrul stressed that to be fair to Tesla, the company had not made any promises to open a factory in Malaysia.
