Right after the global launch of the Huawei P30 series, camera-centric site DxOMark have given the P30 Pro the highest mobile camera score of 112, knocking out the Mate 20 Pro, P20 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S10+ which were at 109. Featuring massive improvements over practically any other smartphone currently in the market, DxOMark not only says that “... the P30 Pro is easily the most versatile mobile imaging tool to date…” but also reveals that its secret to success is a mixture of super resolution or photo binning (combining multiple RAW images into one) like in the Google Pixel 3, the new periscope lens and the ToF sensor.
Apparently, the ToF or Time-of-Flight sensor plays a much larger role than we thought, as it offers faster and more accurate depth mapping that when combined with the periscope lens, up to 50x digital zoom and improved stabilization results in the best performing still image cameraphone yet. They remark that its new RYYB sensor offers good target exposure and detail in low light to very low light, with marked improvements in both zoom and bokeh.
On the video side, they also saw significant improvements with much better stabilization and faster reacting AutoFocus that tracks better and records with lower noise levels and more accurate white balancing. They do note that there are still some issues though as the sky colour can be unnaturally rendered when shooting outdoors sometimes with sometimes soft corners and image artifacts which include hue shift.
While it still beats out its predecessors with a selfie score of 89 thanks to the 32MP front camera, the selfie king remains the Galaxy S10+ at 96. DxOMark do say that the P30 Pro front camera improves on bokeh, exposure and white balance with effective stabilization but the fixed-focus lens has a limited depth of field along with visible noise in outdoor and low light conditions.
We're hoping these slight imperfections can be fixed with more updates, but for now, the P30 Pro is probably the best pioneering periscope zoom cameraphone you can get. Stay tuned to TechNave.com for more Huawei P30 Pro news and all the latest in tech.
