Ever since President Trump returned to office, one of the first executive orders he did was grant TikTok an extension of 75 days until a potential buyer takes over to continue its operations in the US. Well, it's April now and there are still no updates.
With this, Trump decided to extend the deadline again by 75 days, as per Reuters. TikTok did not give any comment regarding the matter, but Trump claimed that there is "tremendous progress" behind the scenes but it requires more time to secure approvals. Trump also mentioned he looks forward to working with TikTok and China to close the deal, as he didn't want the app to "go dark".
A brief history of what happened over the first quarter of this year: The previous administration voted to ban TikTok due to national security concerns, as it was alleged that the company was tied to the Chinese government. After Trump granted TikTok 75 days, he established a US sovereign wealth fund, which could buy over the company. However, up until March last month, no one was trying to buy TikTok, despite a few reported potential buyers.
Then at the end of March, Trump also claimed that the TikTok sale should be completed before 5 April 2025. But looks like that isn't the case, given this latest news. At this point, we can't tell if Trump is just bluffing, as there is a lot of contradictory news. We will just have to wait and see.
