For those unaware, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chose U Mobile as the second 5G provider last year. Then in January 2025, the company received financial support from CIMB for the 5G rollout. And now, MCMC has finally given the green light.
Earlier this morning, U Mobile confirmed that it has received the official letter of award from MCMC to deploy its next-gen 5G network. Not much else of value was mentioned, but there are some basic details of Malaysia's upcoming second 5G network. In January 2025, Tan Sri Vincent Tan estimated that the rollout of the new 5G network would require 15 to 18 months. This means we can expect it to be completed by July 2026.
There was also a benchmark test in February 2025 to find out how U Mobile's 5G network would perform. Using Huawei's Meta Active Antenna Unit (MetaAAU) technology, U Mobile recorded a minimum network speed of 120Mbps and an average network speed of 597Mbps. This test was performed at the Penang Bridge (13.5km), where cars travel at an average speed of 80km/h.
Mind you, that test was over a wide and open area, so speeds could be lower in a busy city area. But so far, U Mobile's 5G network speed looks promising. What do you think? Please share your thoughts in the comments below, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
