Since GSC, TGV and MBO have announced that they are closing down temporarily from the Movement Restriction initiative, we foresee many cinemas elsewhere around the world will do the same. With this, Universal Pictures just did a nice move on distributing their movies via online rental.

At the moment, the rental will begin in the U.S. first and the company is also planning for international markets (hopefully Malaysia is included). Recently released movies such as The Hunt, The Invisible Man, and Emma "will be available on a wide variety of the most popular on-demand services for a 48-hour rental period at a suggested retail price of $19.99". That's the equivalent of ~RM82 here in Malaysia, unofficially.

For their upcoming movies such as Trolls World Tour which is releasing on 10 April, Universal Pictures said that the movie will be available online and in theatres, assuming if the latter chooses to remain open. However, F9 (Fast and Furious 9) isn't included in the online rental list as it was delayed until next year. At this moment, the company is taking the first step in this uncertain period to distribute their films.

“Universal Pictures has a broad and diverse range of movies with 2020 being no exception. Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable,” said Jeff Shell, the CEO of NBCUniversal in a press release. “We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible.”

At the moment, Mulan, A Quiet Place Part 2, Antlers, and New Mutants are delayed with no new dates yet. So hopefully, movie studios like Universal Pictures will take a look into this and find a way for us Malaysians to enjoy the new movies as well (#plssaveus).
