The recently released Apple iPad mini, starting at RM2199, packs impressive tech specs like the A17 Pro chipset, Apple Pencil Pro support, and a vibrant 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display. For Android tablets to compete in Malaysia's growing tablet market, they need to match or surpass these features while offering competitive pricing and attractive features.
So, what features should an Android tablet rival bring to the table to capture the attention of Malaysian consumers?
Key features for an Android iPad mini rival
Here are the key features which we think are absolutely necessary for an Android iPad mini alternative tablet:
- Performance and Processing Power - The latest iPad mini's A17 Pro chip delivers a 30% boost in CPU and 25% better GPU performance over its predecessor. As such, an Android competitor needs to offer similar or better processing power, perhaps using top-tier processors like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or MediaTek Dimensity 9200. After all, smooth performance is essential for handling tasks like gaming, design, or video editing.
- Display Quality - The iPad mini's 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display is one of its standout features. An Android alternative should offer a high-resolution OLED or AMOLED display, with bright and vibrant colours, along with HDR support for an immersive viewing experience and at least FHD or 1080p pixel resolutions. Screen size could range from 8 to 9 inches to strike a balance between portability and usability.
- Stylus and Creative Tools - With the Apple Pencil Pro, the iPad mini is a creative powerhouse. For Android to compete, it must offer a highly responsive stylus with features like pressure sensitivity, tilt recognition, and quick tool-switching. Compatibility with design apps and a robust suite of creativity tools would appeal to artists and professionals alike.
- Camera and Imaging - The iPad mini sports a 12MP wide back camera with Smart HDR 4. An Android competitor would need at least a similar camera setup, plus advanced AI features like document scanning, portrait modes, and HDR optimisation. Front-facing cameras should support features similar to Apple's Center Stage for better video calls.
- Connectivity and Charging - Wi-Fi 6E, 5G support, and USB-C fast charging are crucial in a mobile-first market like Malaysia. Android tablets must meet these standards, ensuring fast downloads, seamless video streaming, and quick data transfers. Offering better battery life or quicker charging could also give Android tablets an edge.
- Pricing and Availability - In Malaysia, the iPad mini starts at RM2199 for the Wi-Fi model and RM2899 for Wi-Fi + Cellular. For an Android tablet to truly compete, it should either match these prices or offer superior features at a slightly lower price point. Early release dates would also be beneficial to quickly capture market attention.
Conclusion - Nothing new that ticks all the boxes just yet
For an Android tablet to rival the iPad mini in Malaysia, it needs to combine high-performance processors, a stunning display, robust creative tools, and competitive pricing. A strong focus on connectivity, camera features, and stylus functionality would ensure that it attracts both tech enthusiasts and professionals. The question is: Will Android manufacturers step up to the challenge?
The latest Lenovo Legion Y700 2024 holds some promise with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of fast UFS 4.0 storage. Its display is an 8.8-inch IPS panel with a 2560 x 1600 pixel max resolution, plus it also has a 6550mAh battery, two USB-C ports, two rear cameras (13MP+2MP), and an 8MP front camera. While reasonably affordable with prices around ~RM1700, it's unfortunately not sold locally in Malaysia and doesn't come with a dedicated stylus.

When thinking about Android tablets and styluses, one can't help but think of Samsung and their S Pen, which we think is comparable to Apple's Pencil Pro. However, the closest in size Samsung tablet with an S Pen would be the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. While it is affordable, with a price of around RM1300, its chipset and memory are rather dated. There is also the more recent Samsung Galaxy Tab A9. But while it has an 8.7-inch display, it only has an HD+ or 800 x 1340 pixel resolution screen. Its other specs are similarly entry-level, and it doesn't support an S Pen stylus.
