In just a few more hours, Google I/O 2024 will happen and some of you may wonder will be announced. Although it's mainly a developer conference, Google I/O tends to have a mix of announcements on new hardware and software updates. Specifically, new Google Pixel devices and Android 15.

We might also get an update on Gemini AI, with possibly new features for mobile users. While we don't have access to Google Pixel devices in Malaysia, Gemini AI updates are pretty relevant for Malaysians. Having said that, what updates will Gemini AI get in Google I/O 2024? Here's a quick recap of what Google has announced so far, followed by what we could expect.

Gemini AI so far

Google first announced Gemini AI as a successor to its previous Google Bard AI platform. The new AI model was designed to be human-like and has been incorporated into various platforms, including an online platform like the previous Google Bard. The sub-variants were dubbed "Nano", "Pro", and "Ultra". Besides Gemini AI for devices, Google also announced Gemini for Google Workspace in February 2024.

Now, Gemini Pro and Gemini Nano are the most relevant for us, as they're meant to be integrated into mobile devices. Currently, the Google Pixel 8 series devices are the only 'official' devices with Gemini Nano. However, Samsung's Galaxy AI is also based on the same AI model that powers Gemini AI and that has been rolled out to various Samsung devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23 Series and others with the OneUI 6.1 update.

In addition, OnePlus and OPPO have confirmed that some of its upcoming devices will also receive Gemini AI integration. Going forward, we can expect more such mobile brands to integrate Gemini AI for their devices.

New Gemini AI updates to come

So, what could Google be planning for Gemini AI during this Google I/O? While we don't have a lot of information on what's upcoming, Google did release a teaser yesterday. It revealed what seems to be Gemini AI responding to voice prompts and live video input. This could be huge, as allowing for voice prompts means you don't have to type. By pairing that with video commands, you could scan your surroundings and prompt the AI for information. This particular feature could be very useful for travellers or those with impaired sight.

Besides that, we may see further improvements to Circle to Search, perhaps with more expanded functions. Considering the teaser on the live video input, we might also see an upgrade to Google Lens. This upgrade should make Google Lens prompt Gemini AI when objects are being scanned. That way, you don't have to take a photo first to use with Circle to Search.

In the wake of Sora, Google could also come out with an improved version of their AI video generator, Lumiere and we also know that Google plans to add Gemini AI-supported music platform integration into Android devices. It could work like smart speakers but with Google Assistant, and for mobile devices. Google could also add support for voice prompts to Gemini AI.

Those points are just some of the updates that could show up at Google I/O 2024 on 14 May 2024 at 10AM PT (1AM here in Malaysia) at their site. What else do you think Google will announce? To be honest, we're hoping for a PC desktop mode for Android 15 but this has never been confirmed as of yet.
