Huawei recently revealed the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus with their dual 12MP camera setup, featuring Leica-certified optics. However, Leica has always been better known as a high-end digital camera and interchangeable lens manufacturer, with next to no participation in phone cameras. So who actually made the dual camera system on the P9 and P9 Plus?
Turns out, they are made by a domestic mobile phone camera module manufacturer authorized by Leica, named Sunny Optical Technology in China. This is also the first time for the Germany-based Leica to cooperate with a Chinese OEM. According to Huawei, they said the cooperation with Leica is strategic and that the P9 and P9 Plus is just the beginning, as there could be more Leica lens in upcoming Huawei flagship devices.
