According to International Data Corporation (IDC)’s latest report, despite the whole Galaxy Note 7 fiasco last year, Samsung remains as the top smartphone brand in Malaysia. OPPO and Huawei takes second and third spot respectively, to make up the top 3 brands that took up more than 50% of the Malaysian market share in 2016. Compared to 2015, smartphone shipments in Malaysia had dropped by 5.9% in 2016. This could be due to various negative economic factors, amongst, which included the weakening Malaysian Ringgit against US Dollar, as well as the rising costs of living in Malaysia.

We are almost at the end of February, which signals the coming MWC 2017 event that will be held on 26 February 2017. Many smartphone manufacturers will be making their appearance there, such as Huawei and Motorola, seems like the HTC will be there too with a rumoured One X10.

If you had never heard of the name Coolpad before this, you’ll be forgiven as they weren’t so well known until recently. After LeEco acquired a controlling stake in Coolpad, they had been making waves with smartphones such as the Cool1 Dual, as well as Cool Changer S1.
Well, it turns out, they seemed to be setting up shop in Malaysia soon! Spotted on their Facebook page, is a recruitment notice for various positions. Does that mean that we’ll be seeing a Malaysian launch of the value for money Coolpad smartphones soon?

Samsung Pay, which was previewed in partnership with Maybank roughly a month ago, will soon be officially launched in Malaysia on 24th February 2017.
What is Samsung Pay? It is a wallet-less mobile payment system, that allows payments to be made at card terminals using compatible Galaxy smartphones (Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy A Series (2016) and Galaxy A Series (2017)). While it was initially available only to Maybank VISA card holders, with the official launch, Samsung Pay will finally be able to accept both Mastercard and VISA cards issued by CIMB, Citi, and Standard Chartered too!

As we gear up for the upcoming announcement or teaser video of the Samsung Galaxy S8 for MWC 2017, serial leaker @evleaks has revealed fairly clear images of the phone in a case. While no tech specs were revealed, the images clearly show a rear fingerprint sensor beside the rear camera and heartrate monitor. It also shows a dual curved edge display and what appears to be an iris scanner.

The ASUS ZenFone 3 range of smartphones looks to be getting the complete set as a leaked image of the ZenFone 3 Go was recently revealed. According to sources, the ZenFone 3 Go will have a metal body, front LED flash, dual mics and be powered by a Qualcomm snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB RAM. Other tech specs include a 5-inch 720p display, 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera but the main kicker is that it could be priced at about $160 (~RM712).

Once again, a couple more new images of the LG G6 leaked ahead of MWC. This time, they are live images showing something new, the phone is turned on and showcasing its Always-On Display, which shows the time, date, battery percentage at all times.
For a change, the phone isn’t the black variety, we could clearly see the minimal bezels on its side and top. The bottom bezel is slightly larger though, and features a simple LG branding in the middle. The rounded corners of the screen are a pleasant change from the usual square cut bezels, giving the phone a better uniformed look to go along with its rounded corners.

It is a complete hospitality solution, that essentially, thru the use of a dedicated smartphone (which is provided as a free amenity in partnering hotels to guests), allows remote access to hotel services, localised city guides and travel facilities.

With the device being made open for pre-booking earlier this month in India, it looks like it’ll also be launching soon in Malaysia too!

If you missed out on getting your hands on a unit of the limited edition Valentine Red OPPO R9s earlier this month, fret not, as OPPO Malaysia is back with yet another special edition of the OPPO R9s! This time, they teamed up with one of their company ambassador in Malaysia, Min Chen.
While it is still essentially the same hardware as the standard R9s that was launched earlier this year, it receives the same striking red finish as the Valentine Red Edition, but this time, instead of offering customised engraving, all OPPO R9s Min Chen Special Edition will have the artist’s signature laser-engraved on its back, much like the OPPO F1s Ayda Jebat Edition. To make it extra special, the OPPO R9s Min Chen Special Edition box set will include a mini Min Chen standee, four postcards featuring the artist’s photo, and a phone cover featuring a cartoonised image of the artist.
