The Minister of Communications has revealed several concerning statistics regarding fraud and scam content in our country. These include how Malaysia has lost RM3.18 billion to online scams between 2021 and April 2024.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today urged all social media platform providers in the country to put disclosures for AI-generated content on their platforms. This is to avoid any unwanted incidents from happening.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has given an update regarding Malaysia’s upcoming second 5G network, revealing that 4 mobile network operators (MNOs) have submitted bids for the network. The MNOs are CelcomDigi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia (TM) and U Mobile.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today revealed that the 1st version of the code of conduct for social media platforms will be enforced starting 1 January 2025. He added that engagement sessions with all social media platform stakeholders will be held soon to create the code of conduct.

Previously, we reported how social media and internet messaging services in Malaysia must apply for a Class Licence beginning today. Now, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has clarified that the licence is only meant for social media and internet messaging operators, hence it won’t affect individual users.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that Meta’s social media platforms lead other platforms in complying with Malaysian laws. On the flip side, X (formerly Twitter) is the worst offender.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has called upon members of the Komuniti MADANI to download the “Price Catcher” app to assist the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in addressing the issue of sudden price hikes in the country. He added that consumers can easily compare prices through the app and find sudden increases in the prices of certain goods.

The Communications Ministry today announced the Rahmah Student Prepaid Package which offers a minimum of 30GB of data for under RM30 and 180-day validity. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil said that the package can be subscribed starting 16 August.

Back in January, we reported how Malaysia’s 5G network coverage in populated areas finally reached the 80 per cent target, hitting 80.2% coverage as of 31 December 2023. However, it seems that the coverage rate has stumbled this year, as only a mere 1.5 per cent coverage increase was recorded in 5 months.

Ministry of Communications has voiced dissatisfaction with the contractors of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) Phase 1 project in the rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak. Its Deputy Minister, Teo Nie Ching revealed that despite the project’s supposed completion in 2022, it is yet to be finished.
