The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recently announced that it will take “stern action” against social media platforms and certain applications that “have not been effective at self-regulating the use of their platforms in line with Malaysia’s laws and national interests”. This is in response to 11858 scam complaints, RM1.2 billion in losses and 2125 reported fake news as of April 2023.

China recently arrested a man called Hong who generated fake news using ChatGPT. The fake news involved a train crash that killed 9 people in China and was spread across 21 different blogs on China’s Baidu with 15000 views. While we’re thinking this is more about the fake news than how it was generated, it could mark the first of many more such arrests using ChatGPT.

In conjunction with the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15), our Prime Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa told the media that there is a new application for him to tackle fake news online and he has approved it already. The app was made by a task force from the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

WhatsApp may potentially be adding a new restriction in future versions of the app which limits users from mass forwarding messages. Spotted in the latest Google Play Beta Program version of the messaging app, the new restriction will only allow messages to be forwarded to just one group chat at a time, presumably in order to curb the spread of misinformation and fake news.
Shared by WABetaInfo, the 2.22.7.2 version of the WhatsApp Google Play Beta Program will mark a message that has previously been forwarded. Moreover, it would then not be possible to forward it to more than one group chat at a time.

A huge amount of misinformation has been spread through social platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp more than before due to the pandemic. To combat this, Facebook has been actively banning 3000 accounts (and counting), groups and pages from doing so.

Late last night, the Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia posted that we could apparently get a faster COVID-19 vaccine appointment on the MySejahtera app. On the contrary, the same Facebook page also quickly debunked the post by saying it's fake news, saying there's no such thing as an appointment shortcut.
