In March last year, Google removed its currency converter widget when users searched for the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR due to a wrong USD to MYR conversion controversy, which led to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) reprimanding the tech giant. Google then disabled the widget to address technical issues, and it has been gone until today, when the feature makes an unexpected return.

Previously, we reported that the currency converter widget on Google is not showing again after it briefly disappeared during the whole wrong USD to MYR conversion fiasco. Now, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed the reason behind the feature being disabled by Google, as informed by the company to him.

Previously, we reported on how the Malaysian government is requesting an explanation from Google after Google Finance erroneously showed an incorrect exchange rate of the United States Dollar (USD) to the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). While Google has yet to issue any statement on the matter, its Google Finance disclaimer page clarified that the service doesn’t verify any finance data and is not obligated to do so.
