  • Huawei Honor 7 officially announced for Europe, coming to Malaysia soon

Huawei Honor 7 officially announced for Europe, coming to Malaysia soon

The Huawei Honor 7 smartphone was officially announced for Europe recently with a full metal body airbrushed with a ceramic coating, fingerprint sensor and 20MP rear camera with phase detection auto focus. Other tech specs include a 64-bit 2.2GHz octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 935 processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB storage + microSD support, 5.2-inch FHD display, 20MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, 3100 mAh battery and fingerprint sensor. The Honor 7 measures in at 143.2 x 71.9 x 8.5mm and weighs in at 157g which is quite light still for a full metal smartphone. While Europe is getting just the gray and silver colour versions, we expect that the gold coloured version will also be available when it comes to Malaysia, estimated to be sometime in September 2015. Apart from that, there don't seem to be any other differences from the previous announcement. No specific Malaysia release dates or pricing details yet but the 16GB version is currently going for about $322 (RM1356) in Europe. • Samsung Galaxy A8 launched officialy in Malaysia for RM1888

Samsung Galaxy A8 launched officialy in Malaysia for RM1888

No surprises yesterday as Samsung launched their latest and greatest addition to the Galaxy A range of smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy A8 for RM1888. Featuring a mix of midrange and flagship tech specs and functions such as a fingerprint sensor, 16MP ISOCELL rear camera, 5MP wide f/1.9 aperture front camera (yep, the one from the Galaxy S6 series) and a midrange 2GB of RAM. Our first impressions of Samsung's thinnest smartphone (5.9mm at it's thinnest point) is that it certainly feels premium and not as large as the 5.7-inch display might suggest. According to Samsung, this is because of even thinner bezels than before while keeping the size compact. Check out our tech spec comparisons below but feel free to use our tech spec comparison tool to compare the Galaxy A8 against any smartphone you can think of. In any case, the Samsung Galaxy A8 is available in black, gold and white at all authorized stores. As part of the launch festivities, Samsung had Juliana Evans as their brand ambassador on hand to give away autographs.

  • HTC One E9+ launched in Malaysia at RM1899

HTC One E9+ launched in Malaysia at RM1899

The HTC One E9+ was recently launched here in Malaysia for RM1899. Available for purchase in Gold Sepia and Classic Rose Gold, the HTC One E9+ is currently on sale at authorized resellers. Tech specs and features look to be the similar as the asian release with a few exceptions which include a Mediatek Helio X10, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage expandable via microSD card, 5.5-inch 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution LCD display, a 20MP rear camera, 4MP UltraPixel front camera, and a 2800mAh battery backed by Android 5.0 (Lollipop) with HTC Sense UI 7.0. Similar to the HTC One E9 the One E9+ has 3GB RAM, a 20MP rear camera and a higher-end 2K or quad HD display. The design is also different in that the One E9+ uses a plastic back with glossy finish. Standout features include HTC Boom Sound and up to 2TB microSD (for when they actually exist), support for flac audio and dual nano SIM 4G LTE.

  • OPPO R7 Plus vs Honor 7 vs Meizu MX5 comparison

OPPO R7 Plus vs Honor 7 vs Meizu MX5 comparison

The OPPO R7 Plus was recently launched in Malaysia yesterday at a rather high price of RM1998. Despite the flagship-level pricing it shares similar features with some other recently launched smartphones. These features include a full metal body, fingerprint scanner, laser autofocus and dual SIM 4G LTE which can also be found in the Huawei Honor 7 and Meizu MX5. Granted, it's 6-inch display is the largest of the three and it packs in 32GB of storage, but the larger size does mean that the R7 Plus is also the heaviest at 203g. Both the Honor 7 and Meizu MX5 are lighter and in the case of the Meizu MX5 thinner as well. Technically, none of the three are currently available but the OPPO R7 Plus is coming on pre-order for 11 July 2015 in the next few days. Price-wise the Meizu MX5 beats them all with 1800CNY (RM1081) but this is for the 16GB storage version. Strangely enough, the most expensive OPPO R7 Plus packs in the least powerful processor with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615, a processor that we see more often in midrange offerings. Huawei Honor 7 vs Meizu MX5 comparisons

Announced at around the same time, the Huawei Honor 7 and Meizu MX5 share a number of similar features such as an all metal body, more than 5-inch sized full HD display, fingerprint scanner and 20MP rear cameras. Neither are currently available here in Malaysia yet but at 1800 CNY (RM1081) the Meizu MX5 is priced lower than Honor 7 which is going for 1999 CNY (RM1214). The Honor 7 is more compact due to its 5.2-inch display but the Meizu MX5 is thinner at 7.6mm and lighter at 149g despite the larger 5.5-inch display. Both come packing with the latest 64-bit processors, the Honor 7 with a HiSilicon Kirin 935 while the Meizu MX5 comes with a MediaTek MT6795 Helio processor.

The Honor 7 ups the Meizu MX5 with an 8MP front camera but the MX5 has a slightly higher 20.7MP rear camera compared to the 20MP rear camera on the Honor 7. The Honor 7 rear camera uses phase detection autofocus while the Meizu MX5 uses a laser autofocus. Which autofocus is better? Well, the debate on that still hasn't quieted down yet, especially if Huawei uses newer algorithms and sensors like in the Samsung Galaxy S6 which also uses phase detection autofocus. So far, there are still no details yet on which will be coming to Malaysia first, but both have a presence here so we would say in the coming months. • Huawei's Honor Band Zero and Honor Whistle also get announced

Huawei's Honor Band Zero and Honor Whistle also get announced

Apart from the Honor 7 announcement yesterday, Huawei also announced a new smartwatch with the Honor Band Zero and a Bluetooth headset called the Honor Whistle. Both feature a brushed metal look and chamfered machined edges for a classy finish. The Honor Band Zero in particular is a circular smartwatch + pedometer and fitness tracker that has IP68 water and dust resistance certification. It looks to come with different coloured bands but the main watch is a silver circle with brushed metal edges. The Honor Whistle on the other hand appears to be a Bluetooth headset which features a circular button on the side, perhaps to control volume. No other details of tech specs, features, Malaysia release dates or pricing were available but these two accessories could arrive alongside the Honor 7 when it makes it's way here to Malaysia.

  • Full-metal Honor 7 is official with 20MP phase-detection camera and fingerprint sensor from RM1214

Full-metal Honor 7 is official with 20MP phase-detection camera and fingerprint sensor from RM1214

Huawei have officially announced their Honor 7 smartphone today and like the Honor 6 Plus before it, it comes with a host of flagship features for a very affordable price tag. Finally going upwards from the previous Honor design, the Honor 7 offers a full metal unibody frame and backplate complete with a fingerprint scanner like the Huawei Mate 7. Breaking free of previous restrictions it is also the first Honor smartphone to come with a 20MP rear camera which also comes with phase detection auto-focus, dual tone LED flash and a sapphire protective glass layer. Tech specs include a 64-bit 2.2GHz octa-core Kirin 935 processor, 3GB RAM, 5.2-inch FHD display, 8MP front camera, 3100 mAh battery, fast charging and Android 5.0 Lollipop. Pricing is surprisingly affordable with the single SIM 4G LTE version with 16GB storage going for 1999 CNY (RM1214), the dual SIM 4G LTE version for 2199 CNY (RM1335) and the dual SIM 4G LTE version with 64GB storage going for 2499 CNY (RM1517). No Malaysia release dates or pricing details yet but Honor Malaysia should be bringing it in soon. A lot of other features are also available such as more complete voice commands like the speech awareness on the Huawei P8, while the premium design should make the Honor 7 even more of a value-beating device here in Malaysia.
