Rumours: Samsung VP confirms Galaxy Gear smartwatch, no flexible screen

While we've been speculating a lot about the Samsung Galaxy Gear, Samsung's upcoming smartwatch, a Samsung VP recently confirmed that it would be coming on 4 September 2013. This comes courtesy of Lee Young-hee, Samsung Mobile VP who confirmed that it would make an appearance, perhaps at the Samsung Unpacked 2 event on the same date. If or when that happens, it would likely be revealed alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which is rumoured to be revealed at the same event. He also confirmed that it won't have a flexible screen, going on to say that the Samsung Galaxy Gear will be a:

"wearable concept device" and is "confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry"

  • Rumours: Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch coming in 5 colours?

Rumours: Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch coming in 5 colours?

With just about two more weeks before the Samsung Unpacked 2 event (where the Samsung Galaxy Gear is probably going to be announced), and we have some more rumours coming out about the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. This time around the rumours indicate that we may now get the smartwatch in blackgreyorangewhite and now white gold which is probably going to be released after the other 4 colours. The leak comes courtesy of SamMobile who are usually quite accurate about most things Samsung related but as always do take it with a pinch of salt. In all likelihood, the Samsung Galaxy Gear may come in a lot more colours than just 5 but this is the colour list we have for now. As a refresher, the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch is expected to be revealed on 4 September at the IFA 2013 with sales release dates expected in September to October of 2013. Again no news on pricing or availability in Malaysia just yet, but we'll keep you updated.

Rumours: More Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch tech specs leak, cool concept video included

All eyes are on Samsung to deliver a better smartwatch than the ones already in the market, especially as Apple is having problems with the iWatch. Quite a lot of rumoured tech specs have been circulating recently for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch which includes:

    • 1.5GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos 5412 processor / 1.5Ghz dual-core Exynos 4212 processor
    • 1GB RAM
    • 1.67-inch AMOLED display (320 x 320 pixels) / 2.5-inch OLED display (320 x 320 pixels) / 3.5-inch display
    • 2MP Camera
    • Supports Bluetooth 4.0 LE + NFC + speaker + mic
    • Android 4.1 / Android 4.2
  • Hyetis Crossbow smartwatch to offer 41MP camera at $1200

Hyetis Crossbow smartwatch to offer 41MP camera at $1200

After the recent Ubuntu Edge introduction, all sorts of startups promising super-high-end tech gadgets seem to be coming up and Hyetis is no different. The only difference is that rather than a smartphone, Hyetis are aiming for a smartwatch called the Hyetis Crossbow that will feature a 41MP camera sensor along with a whole bunch of other high-end features. The company has come up with a number of renders for the device and have stated that it will have a zoom lens with a ring flash, noise-cancelling microphone, GPS, Biometric sensors, WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth while supporting Android, iOS and Windows Phone 8 smartphones. While we're thinking an additional fingerprint scanner sounds just a bit far-fetched, such a smartwatch would probably merit the asking price of $1200 (RM3933) which Hyetis wants for it. There aren't any details on how they'd fit in a battery that could support all this and last for a day but if you're interested do check out the Hyetis site.

  • Rumours: Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch to be unveiled at IFA and called the SM-V700

Rumours: Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch to be unveiled at IFA and called the SM-V700

According to some tipsters, the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch is apparently real and coming soon under the model name of SM-V700. The smartwatch will use an OLED flexible display and have two capacitive touch buttons for the menu and the back button along with a physical power button. There may also be a USB port for charging and a standard 3.5mm jack for microphone, speakers or headphones. These same tipseters say that it will likely be revealed at the upcoming Samsung Unpacked 2 event on 4 September right before the IFA 2013 as an additional accessory to the Samsung Galaxy Note III phablet (which sounds quite similar to how Sony revealed their recent SmartWatch 2). No other details just yet, but the tipsters are quite well known for being accurate so we'll just wait and see what happens.

  • Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch concept render shows up

Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch concept render shows up

Recently the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch got a trademark application along with a couple of patents giving a flexible look to Samsung's upcoming smartwatch. In view of this some renderers have come up with some glossy looking pics of how the smartwatch would look, based on these patents. The renders do look good but admittedly don't have a very official look to them. However, they could give some idea as to how the smartwatch may be personalized if the design does get adopted for the Samsung Galaxy Gear. For now, check out the pics of the smartwatch in colour and see if it's futuristicly flexible screen is the one you'd wrap around your wrist if you were ever in the market for a smartwatch.

Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch drafted and trademarked

Just like everyone else, Samsung are developing a smartwatch and according to trademark application forms drafted to the US patents office, it will be named the Samsung Galaxy Gear. In statements that are nearly impossible to miss the application states a wristwatch device for notifications much in the same way as other smartwatch devices. In related news, Samsung was also caught patenting some wristwatch designs including a flexible display model that curls up like a wristband. No news when it will be coming to Malaysia and other markets or for how much but we expect very soon, especially with the upcoming unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Note III. For now, check out the various patent drawings and applications below for a look at what could be Samsung's new smartwatch.
