Previously, we reported on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s promise to reconsider Touch ’n Go’s monopoly and how users may soon be able to pay for public transport using debit and credit cards. Well, another major announcement was made in regard to breaking Touch ’n Go’s monopoly, whereby users of 5 highways will be able to pay tolls using debit and credit cards by this September.

Announced by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the five highways are:

  • Sungai Besi Expressway
  • New Pantai Expressway
  • Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway
  • Guthrie Corridor Expressway
  • Penang Bridge.

Moreover, Alexander elaborated that this open payment system is one of the initial initiatives as a transition towards the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system. MLFF will remove boom barriers and implement a non-stop toll collection system at toll plazas.

According to Bernama, the Works Minister said that the MLFF proof of concept will be carried out before the end of October this year. MLFF itself will be implemented in phases by the third quarter of 2024 at the latest.
