Huawei P8 Lite review - Affordable yet stylish brushed metal full frame smartphone

If you ever compared the Huawei P7 against the Huawei P8 you would be forgiven if you wondered how the design made such a drastic leap from the glass and metal frame of the P7 to the full metal P8. It turns out that the missing link between the two is the Huawei P8 Lite as it offers a stylish brushed metal full metal frame from the P8 with a front and back similar to the P7. In addition, it is currently being priced for below RM800.  Does it manage to bridge the gap in terms of other aspects as well? We find out in our Huawei P8 Lite review below.

  • Huawei Honor 7 vs Meizu MX5 comparisons

Huawei Honor 7 vs Meizu MX5 comparisons

Announced at around the same time, the Huawei Honor 7 and Meizu MX5 share a number of similar features such as an all metal body, more than 5-inch sized full HD display, fingerprint scanner and 20MP rear cameras. Neither are currently available here in Malaysia yet but at 1800 CNY (RM1081) the Meizu MX5 is priced lower than Honor 7 which is going for 1999 CNY (RM1214). The Honor 7 is more compact due to its 5.2-inch display but the Meizu MX5 is thinner at 7.6mm and lighter at 149g despite the larger 5.5-inch display. Both come packing with the latest 64-bit processors, the Honor 7 with a HiSilicon Kirin 935 while the Meizu MX5 comes with a MediaTek MT6795 Helio processor.

The Honor 7 ups the Meizu MX5 with an 8MP front camera but the MX5 has a slightly higher 20.7MP rear camera compared to the 20MP rear camera on the Honor 7. The Honor 7 rear camera uses phase detection autofocus while the Meizu MX5 uses a laser autofocus. Which autofocus is better? Well, the debate on that still hasn't quieted down yet, especially if Huawei uses newer algorithms and sensors like in the Samsung Galaxy S6 which also uses phase detection autofocus. So far, there are still no details yet on which will be coming to Malaysia first, but both have a presence here so we would say in the coming months. Huawei P8 Lite available in Europe, coming to Malaysia soon?

Despite not being mentioned alongside the Huawei P8 and Huawei P8 Max, it turns out that the Huawei P8 Lite is still a very real smartphone. According to one seller in Europe, they have a good amount of stock ready for sale going for 79999HUF (RM1061). Tech specs and features include a 1.2GHz octa-core Kirin 620 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, 5-inch display with 720p resolution, 13MP main camera, 5MP front camera and 2200 mAh battery. Unlike the Honor 4C which offers similar specs, the P8 Lite is thinner and comes with a more premium metal frame. Still no exact Malaysia release dates or pricing details yet but according to an anonymous source, Huawei could be bringing in the Huawei P8 Lite for Malaysia soon. This could indicate a launch just for the Huawei P8 Lite here in Malaysia as our other sources have said that there will not be a Malaysia launch for the Huawei P8, which is due for a regional launch in Singapore this June 2015.
