The technology uses a TrueDepth camera system to create a detailed 3D map of the user's face, which allows it to "remember" the user for activities such as unlocking the phone and making purchases. However, there are some new products including the iPhone SE (2020) and the entry-level iPad are still using Touch ID for such purposes. It's reported that Apple might change that soon by equipping all of its future products with Face ID.
