Is Apple planning to change the name of the iPhone and iOS?

The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2020 may be online this year but it's expected to have plenty of new reveals. Besides new MacBooks with ARM CPUs and an iMac with Face ID, sources claim that Apple could announce a name change for both the iPhone and iOS.

In a tweet posted earlier today, Jon Prosser dropped the words "iPhone OS". Max Weinbach followed up by claiming he received an email informing him that Apple has plans to rename iOS to iPhone OS, while the iPhone could be rebranded as the Apple Phone. The two leakers are known for fairly reliable leaks, so there's a chance that this could be true.

This isn't the first time Apple has renamed something, with the company having made a derivative version of iOS for the iPad and naming it the iPadOS last year. However, if the iOS is to be renamed to the iPhone OS, then why rename the iPhone to Apple Phone? Thematically, that wouldn't fit anymore.

There's also the possibility that this name change is a wild rumour, so do take it with a grain of salt. Then again, we'll know whether it's true or not after next week's WWDC.
