As we’ve reported previously, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) held a meeting with Tesla delegations today, held at Menara MITI. Its Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul took to his social media to provide insight into the meeting, revealing Tesla’s commitment to strengthening the EV ecosystem in Malaysia.

Much has been said about Tesla over the past week, including how the company allegedly cancelled its plans to build factories in Southeast Asia, as well as how it’s suffering losses and can’t compete with Chinese EV makers. Now, after MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul clarified that Tesla never committed to building factories in Malaysia, he revealed that his Ministry will be meeting with Tesla representatives from the US to discuss its investment plans in our country.

Previously, we mentioned PMX’s announcement on Tesla’s news. Now, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul came forward to explain that the ministry or any of its agencies had never made an announcement that Tesla would open a factory in Malaysia. Minister of International Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced that US-based chip maker Intel has given its commitment to invest over RM30 billion in Malaysia. The investment is in regard to the company’s operations expansion in Penang and Kulim, Kedah.
