Last month, Ericsson announced the establishment of its 5G Network Operations Centre. It was another milestone in our country's 5G development. With the networks starting to roll out, local telcos are also starting to push out new services, and U Mobile is one of them.

Opensignal have recently announced the results for their Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 and Netherlands is the best place for video, South Korea is the best for gaming and has fastest average download speeds (~143 Mbps) while Denmark wins it for uploading (~20.9 Mbps). Malaysia’s telcos on the other hand managed to score with improvements in 4G Availability - Global Rising Stars but after Malaysia shut down 3G mobile connectivity last year, this isn’t entirely unexpected.

As many of you should know by now, the Malaysian government is planning to use Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) as a single wholesale model to distribute 5G services. At the same time, they are having second thoughts of that to allow competition and now according to Reuters, our local telcos have recommended allowing a second 5G service.

Today, U Mobile just launched a new RM0 Phones for Everyone campaign. Not only is this for existing U Mobile users but new subscribers are eligible as well. As long as they sign up for the Giler Unlimited GX68 postpaid plan, they will bring home a new Samsung Galaxy A02 phone with no upfront payment, no approvals and a contract of just 12 months.

As our economic sector is slowly reopening, Opensignal is back once again with another report on Malaysians' mobile data experience. The last report was done in April 2021 just before the lockdown, so in this latest news - the data gathered was between 1 June until 29 August 2021 based on Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile and Unifi. 

Today, U Mobile has announced a new collaboration agreement with Allo Technology Sdn Bhd and together, U Mobile is offering a new Ultra Unlimited Home Fibre Broadband for Malaysians residing in Melaka, Cyberjaya, Perak and Kedah as a pilot. The orange telco intends to make its fibre broadband plans available to more locations and non-U Mobile customers soon.

From time to time, we would publish an article comparing all the package plans offered by our four local telcos - Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile. Usually, it would be about the latest iPhones or Samsung Galaxy devices, and some special postpaid plans they would offer. This time, we will be touching on the OPPO Reno6Z 5G and Reno6 5G together. Let's get right to it. 

In conjunction with Merdeka and Malaysia Day, U Mobile is having a promotion from now until 16 September 2021. In support of the government's Pakej Peranti RM1 Malaysia Prihatin initiative, the orange telco will offer an RM0.99 4G VoLTE-enabled mobile phone for U Mobile customers. 

Today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a total of 64 compounds worth RM3.2 million in the second quarter of 2021 to four telcos. Like before, Maxis, U Mobile, Digi and XOX Com got fined due to failure to comply with the numbering plan and electronic addressing as well as non -compliance with the Prepaid Guidelines for end-user registration.

Today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) just posted an announcement that Malaysians would be able to have a free call during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays. In this short announcement, all the local telcos are in agreement that the free calls will start from 10 PM today (12 May 2021) until 10 AM (13 May 2021).
