The 'deepfake' technology has now been detected as being used for online fraud purposes. Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, YDH CP Dato' Sri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf informed that there were three police reports - each in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu and Penang regarding impersonation fraud believed to be using deepfake technology. So, what should you know about it?

The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) announced that the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has collected a total of RM1318240.00 in outstanding traffic fines. This was announced in conjunction with the national Unity Week 2024 celebration which took place from May 23 to 26 in Angsana Johor Bahru. According to the statistics on the third day of the program, PDRM managed to collect the highest amount of traffic fines through the event.

Yesterday, we reported how Meta and TikTok have pledged their commitments to monitor fake news and 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues on their platforms following a meeting with MCMC and the Communications Ministry. Today, MCMC and PDRM released a joint statement following up on the matter, urging the 2 companies to step up monitoring of harmful content.

Previously, we shared how the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will gradually wear body cameras starting this October. Well, the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) may also implement body cameras in the near future, as such an initiative was just proposed by the Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Election and Institutional Reform.

A total of RM2.5 million in losses was recorded in 2023 linked to fraud cases on social applications. The number covers as many as 494 cases involving cases of impersonation as a contact through social applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook. So, what should you know about it?

Previously, we mentioned how the MCMC has blocked over 2.6 million scam calls. Today, the CEO of Gogolook, Manwoo Joo announced the pick-up rate for scam calls has fallen by 10%. This success can be credited to Whoscall collaboration with PDRM.

At the end of June 2023, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it will take legal action against Meta for not cooperating to remove scam ads on Facebook. But that has been resolved, as announced by our Minister of Communications and Digital, YB Fahmi Fadzil. 

Yesterday, Telegram finally met up with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications and Digital. In conclusion, it was reported that Telegram will be working closely with the Malaysian government as well as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to tackle cybercrime.

All summonses from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Road Transport Department (JPJ) are set to be integrated into one database system beginning this year. According to the Transport Ministry’s Secretary-General Datuk Isham Ishak, the initiative would allow for the summons system issued by both agencies to be more effective in terms of enforcement.
