It's been more than a year now since we heard about HongMeng OS (or also known as HarmonyOS). Up until now, it was speculated to be the replacement for Huawei's smartphones lineup but nothing really happened and it was revealed to be made more for the company's ecosystem instead. But recently, Huawei Consumer Business Software President Wang Chengju revealed that HongMeng OS 2.0 is expected to be released in December 2020.

When Huawei announced HarmonyOS 2.0 last month, it was mentioned that a mobile version for it may be available by December. Although the user interface (UI) doesn't equate to the operating system (OS), it seems that EMUI could be phased out with EMUI 11 being the last.

With the announcement of HarmonyOS 2.0 back in last month, many are expecting HUAWEI to bring the in-house operating system (OS) to smartphones. However, it was revealed earlier that the Chinese tech giant will only launch the first smartphone with the HarmonyOS next year. Now, it appears that not only new smartphones can have the OS, but current HUAWEI and HONOR devices will also get to make the switch (well, at least some).

Following the official announcement of HarmonyOS 2.0 by Huawei last night (finally), the Chinese smartphone brand has also launched a HarmonyOS website for developers to download. Available in both Mandarin and English, the software is introduced as a customizable and open-source OS where developers can download for free to work on it.

To deal with not able to use Google Services anymore, the Chinese tech giant still have their HarmonyOS that continues to be big. Today, the president of HUAWEI's consumer business software department Wang Chenglu has announced the exciting future plan for the operating system at the 2020 Huawei Developer Conference.

At the end of August, Huawei CEO Richard Yu said that there will be no smartphones that will have HarmonyOS in 2020. But that doesn't mean there wouldn't be any HarmonyOS-based device this year. In fact, rumours claim that Huawei could launch tablets this year that feature its in-house operating system.

We all know that the US ban is causing a lot of troubles to HUAWEI. From Google services to the production of chipsets, the Chinese tech giant is determined to overcome them one by one. Earlier, it was reported that the company's self-made HarmonyOS will be featured on all their devices in the future. Now, it looks like they are slowly achieving the goal by announcing the first smartphone that comes with the system later this year.
