Over 73 per cent of cell phone numbers in our country, or approximately 21 million people were leaked or sold to scammers last year. According to the Gogolook 2022 Annual Fraud Report, Malaysia was granted the unwanted title of being 1st place in cell phone numbers breached by the global security company.

The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has instructed all telco companies in Malaysia to block any URL links in short message services (SMS). The directive, made through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was to ensure that no malicious URL is being spread that would possibly make people become victims of scams.

The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) would be calling up messaging platform Telegram to discuss issues involving the application, especially regarding the security of users. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil said that although Telegram was used by many, including the government to share information, KKD would not compromise when it comes to matters of public security.

We called it when Microsoft announced their VALL-E AI voice cloning project, but scammers using such AI voice cloners have already put them into action as an elderly couple were recently scammed out of $21000 Canadian dollars (~RM69115). Apparently, a “lawyer” had called the elderly couple claiming that their son had killed an American diplomat in a car accident, was in jail without a phone and needed money for legal fees.

The Minister of Communications and Digital (KKD), Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that a whopping 1.8 billion scam calls have been blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) from 2017 to 2022. Furthermore, a total of 300 million scam messages via SMS were also blocked since 2018.

The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has revealed that almost RM600 million in losses were recorded in 2022 due to scams and other cyber crimes in Malaysia. Hence, the ministry will focus on educating the public to be more digitally literate and not become victims.

Microsoft recently announced their new VALL-E AI text to speech synthesizer that can simulate or mimic a voice using just a 3-second audio sample. Considering how cybercriminals and cheaters are using new AI tech so quickly, my kneejerk reaction to this was a resounding “BUT WHY!?” (cue Jackie Chan meme) but thankfully this might not be the case... yet.

Just over the weekend, a 55-year-old man from Kuantan just got scammed hard. He only wanted to buy some Touch 'n Go (TnG) cards for his family but it turned into a nightmare as he lost RM23,514 to a scammer online.

To tackle the issue, Whoscall has been appointed by the Royal Police Malaysia (PDRM) as the strategic partner to fight against serious fraud crime in Malaysia. This collaboration involves fraud number database sharing from the PDRM CCID portal to Whoscall's data system as an updated and reliable caller ID application for Malaysians.
